This is an adaption of the kolshi found in India and Pakistan and originally made from pottery water containers. Our kolshis are slightly different from the originals in that they have a goatskin playing surface as well as the terracotta sides and funnel.

You can make a wide range of sounds by tapping, stroking, hitting with the hands, fingers or with sticks or pads and using the goatskin or the terracotta surfaces. The funnel and side hole give yet more possibilities - try using the flat of your hand over the funnel to produce a distinctive "glulp" sound. These are great instruments and, being made of terracotta, need to be treated with respect.
