Description

This collection of our most durable instruments has been designed to provide a selection of stimulating instruments that will allow children to make their own musical explorations with only minimal supervision. The beautiful (and tough) basket contains a variety of percussion instruments from around the world, specially selected to be able to withstand plenty of punishment. We know enough about the ingenuity of children not to guarantee that your charges won't be able to break them, but we're confident that these will give lots of stimulation and that they'll last and last.

How it's Played

All the instruments are "pick up and play" - they don't really need any instruction.

The basket comes complete with a copy of our brilliant “Grown-Up’s Guide”, 16 pages of practical and creative musical activities for developing well-balanced young musicians. The Guide has been written especially for non-musicians ad is in three main sections: Exploring Sounds, Making Music and Using the Instruments to Improve Learning. It covers amongst other topics:

Creating Sounds
Sorting Sounds
Talking Sounds
Playing Pictures
Exporing & Building with Rhythms
What Animal is That?
Nursery Rhymes and Fairy Tales
Echoes
Mixing Rhythms

and the final section shows how music and rhythm can tansform other fields of learning, from counting to phonetics, making them easy and fun to learn.

What it goes well with

All of the "indestructibles" sound well played together but you can experiment with different subsets of sounds. Try starting a rhythm with one instrument and then add new rhythms on top, one by one. Or start by "sorting" the sounds into high, medium, low or hard and soft (how else can you sort sounds?) and then try combining sounds using instruments from within one group and compare this with combining sounds from each of the groups. There are so many possibilities and they all produce different results.

How it's Made

All our instruments, and the baskets, are made in Bali using natural and local materials. Most are made to our designs in local villages where they create a useful source of income for families and a low stress, clean and safe type of work.

The beautiful and sturdy baskets are woven by hand from bamboo fibres and are used by Balinese artists, musicians and dancers for carrying their costumes and materials.

How to look after it

None of the instruments need any special maintenance. Just be careful not to let the basket and contents get damp and don't put it on radiator or anywhere too hot. The instruments are tough but they're still instruments and need to be treated with respect and smaller children should have some supervision.
