How it's Played

Traditionally

Slonding is one of Balinese sacred ensembles, mostly performed at Tenganan Village and Asak Village. Slonding uses seven-tone scales. It has so many repertoires, such as special repertoire called “geguron” which is used to accompany special ceremony, and considered sacred so it can’t be recorded by anyone. The other repertoires are used to accompany the dance and for instrumental. Some of the pieces (in Balinese, piece means “gending”) are transferred from Gamelan Gambang, one of Balinese old xylophones ensembles which also use seven-tone scales. Slonding in this recording comes from the village of Tenganan Pegeringsingan, one of Balinese old villages which has different custom comparing with the other villages in Bali.
