The angklung is a wonderful Indonesian instrument; simple, easy to play and particularly good for group playing as it's less about technique (there are few easier instruments to play than the angklung) and more about coordination and teamwork. This set has ten separate bamboo angklung, each tuned to a different note of the western scale. The angklung come together with a bamboo stand, which is very easy to put together but is a bit rickety. It's also possible to hang them from any horizontal bar or pipe so you may find a more convenient way for storing them when not in use. Classrooms in Singapore, where they're played quite a lot, may have many sets of anklung hanging from the ceiling!

How to Play it

To play, hold a single angklung by its base and then gently rock it back and forth sideways to produce repeated notes. Not so difficult! For variety uou can rock the angklung faster or slower and more or less vigorously but that's about it. The challenge comes in when playing in a group: as each angklung produces only a single note, to produce a tune coordination is needed between several players - as in handbell or bell-ringing. A little practice will get the group started and everyone will find it both satisfying and instructive as the coordination improves. Brilliant for developing listening, coordination and general teamwork.
